So, what is the Whole30?
Well, I am glad you asked!
Here’s how the creators Dallas and Melissa Hartwig describe it:
The Whole30® is our original nutritional program designed to change your life in 30 days. Think of it as a short-term nutritional reset, designed to help you put an end to unhealthy cravings and habits, restore a healthy metabolism, heal your digestive tract, and balance your immune system.
More in depth explanation can be found HERE.
The rules?
No sugar (real or substitutes)No alcohol
No dairy
No grains
No legumes (including no soy)
No carrageenan, MSG, or sulfites
Do not recreate baked goods, junk food, or treats with Whole 30 approved foods
And no weighing or measuring yourself until you’re done
FOR THIRTY DAYS. (See the Whole 30 rules PDF here.)
What does that leave? Lots of fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, and spices.*
Sounds crazy right? Perhaps drastic? It is. But that's okay. I have been having a lot of digestion issues, terrible stomach aches, headaches, sluggishness, lack of motivation, and baaaaad eating habits over the last year or so and it just seems to be getting worse so I feel that drastic is necessary in order to gain a healthy relationship with food (which is a major goal of this program. I mean hello, how many of us turn to food for comfort {hence the term "comfort food"} or out of boredom?) and become a healthier version of myself for my family, myself, and my God (may sound weird to some but this is the only body He has given me. Should I not honor Him by caring for it?).
So, there's that. Now on to what some of you stopped by for, what I ate Day 1 and how I felt.
Day 1
BREAKFAST:
3 Organic, Cage Free eggs (locally bought) scrambled with yellow bell pepper and spinach. Topped with a drizzle of Frank's hot sauce. With a side of strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries (I think I only ate two blueberries because my toddler LOVES blueberries so he insisted on eating them all!)
This was a pretty good breakfast. I am not a huge scrambled egg fan but it seemed like the easiest way to get some veggies in with my meal. However, I had to gag down the last two bites because scrambled eggs...meh. And course, the berries were delicious because they're berries.
LUNCH:
Aidell's Chicken & Apple Sausage (sounds weird but don't knock it till you try it. Seriously, so yum!) with a baked sweet potato topped with a little coconut oil and sprinkle of cinnamon (again, little man ate quite a bit of my potato because he also LOVES sweet potatoes).
Super duper yummy lunch. I was so hesitant when I heard people eating Chicken & Apple sausages. Sounds so odd to me but seriously, I could eat them all day every day....so good! I like mine sliced and sauteed so they get a little brown and crispy on the outside..yum! Also, little man is fan of them too so that's always a plus!
SNACK:
Pretty self-explanatory from the picture but I had La Croix Lemon SparklingWater with a fuji apple (which I of course shared with the kiddo...he is a bottomless pit ;) )
DINNER:
{Grass-Fed} Beef Taco Meat made with homemade taco seasoning topped with Muir Glen Organics Mild Salsa, guacamole and cauliflower.
Guys. For real. This was SO GOOD. I probably could have eaten the entire skillet but I think my belly would have exploded (not. a. good. idea.)
How I Felt...
I actually felt really great! It felt weird not wanting (or needing) to snack all day because I was eating good, solid, real food that was sustainable and kept me full through out the day. AND for the first time in while ((drum roll please...) I did not have a stomach ache or digestion issues! Yay! I did however end up with a headache, which they say is pretty common for the first week or so. However, I do not know that the headache was related (or fully related) to the program. You see, our AC is broken and it has been like 86 degrees in our house so there has been lack of sleep and lots of sweating and getting so hot but not ever cooling down going on so I think that's where the headache came from (plus a major storm came through last night and my head always acts up when that happens). But who knows. Only time will tell if the headache is detox related or heat/lack of sleep related or a combo of both (probably the latter). Either way, I feel great and am so excited for the next 29 days!Interested in learning more?

I've just started my (4th) whole30 yesterday! So we're going roughly at the same pace... ;) I love the simplicity of the program and the food is really good once you get used to it. I need to get my act together as I have been eating reallllly bad for the past couple of months and I needed to start looking out for my health. I'll be following you along!
ReplyDeleteAw yay! I hope the best for you! I love the simplicity of it too and I love the food...for me unhealthy eating has just been because it is convenient. I love this program because it makes me plan and be prepared. I will definitely follow along with you too :)
